Fantastic Planet Media Expansion

Procreate & Adobe Illustrator

Overview

The goal of this project was to take a film from the Criterion Collection, a series of classic and contemporary films, and create original creative assets for a modern audience. I chose a French film, Fantastic Planet, also known as : La Planet Sauvage.

Approach

This film was originally released in 1968, so its promotional media is limited to mostly movie posters. I decided to create 3 pieces that would be used to promote the movie for a broader audience in 2023.

I started this process by hand drawing 3 elements from the movie that stood out to me using procreate. I attempted to draw these assets in my own style, using less shading and more cohesive line usage.

The first piece I created followed the poster trend. I wanted to employ one of my hand-drawn assets, along with the movie's color scheme. I attempted to pull away from the blue color the original movie posters use heavily and instead wanted to draw the audience to the bright red eyes.

The second piece is an instagram story. I imagine this coming up as an advertisement for a sophisticated audience, specifically artists like me that are drawn to intricate shapes. I chose to use a monochrome color scheme to allude less to the plot itself and invoke a sense of curiosity in the viewers about the movie.

Lastly, my favorite piece is a mock-up of a sticker pack that would be released by this movie's media team. I wanted to play on the childish nature of stickers as well as the strange style and nature of this film.
