Bushy Bandana
Procreate & Data Collection
Overview
The goal of this project was to conduct a case study about something I observed daily. I chose to focus on squirrels as a way to reconnect with nature during my finals season. I was also curious as to how squirrels are impacted by the urbanism of Atlanta.
The next challenge was to transfer this data to a wearable piece of clothing.
Approach
I began this project by collecting data once a day in a particular spot on my college campus. For a week, I sat for 30 minutes and kept a count of squirrels I saw in that area. I created a stream graph as a way to display this data.
I decided to display this data as a bandana that can be worn across the head or around the neck. I wanted the design itself to be playful while also evoking questions. This was best possible in a very visible wearable. I wanted the design itself to embody granola aesthetics to go along with the subject matter. I chose to incorporate the shape of the data within the squirrels tail to subtly conceal the data while also adding a striking contrast.
Throughout this process I learned how the construction and class release times impacted the density of squirrels.
