"Protect Palestinian People" Mural

Adobe Illustrator

Overview

The goal of this project was to design an impactful street mural.

Approach

My inspiration for this mural came from an article I read titled "These Palestinian mothers in Gaza gave birth Oct. 7. Their babies have known only war". I wanted to use this mural to humanize the conflict occurring between Palestine and Israel. I did this by incorporating culturally significant aspects of Palestinian culture into the design.

The background is based on a keffiyeh, which is a traditional face covering. Its design is rooted in Palestinian history: the fishnet design is to represent Palestinian sailors and the Mediterranean sea; the bold lines are to represent the trade routes throughout Palestine; the leaves are to represent olive trees and their perseverance, resilience, and strength. I decided to experiment by creating my own font using the leaves to say “Protect People” and design the mural to compare to a traditional keffiyeh. Next I outlined an image of a Palestinian mother and child from using the colors red and green to refer to the Palestinian flag. I chose a mother and child from the article I read because I wanted to invoke feelings of empathy about these lives.
