Le Selfie
Procreate & Adobe Photoshop
Overview
The goal of this project was to create a selfie that utilizes my visual voice to represent an element of my journey in digital art and creative design (without WORDS!).
Approach
My inspiration for this selfie was a collage of magazine cutouts. I wanted to thoughtfully but also uniquely integrate different entities that represented me. First I started with a mirror selfie, in which I attempted to capture not only my face, but my clothes and stature as well. I chose to take this selfie with my front camera towards the mirror as a form of experimentation. I chose to not center my selfie, using the two thirds rule to bring the audience's attention to both versions of my face. Next I focused on the background, I chose an image I took this summer while I was in Panama. It was my first time traveling alone, so it reminds me of my independence. It is quite a colorful image of the beach and houses along the coast, so I decided to dull it out by applying a blue transparent filter on top to bring focus to my selfie and begin to establish a color theme by matching to the color of my shirt. I then began to add many different images that represent important aspects of my life to add to the design. Each of these help to represent some of my passions, including my love for food, art and nature. Then, I used a “rope” brush to bring cohesion to all my different elements. I wanted the strokes to look like yarn, which alludes to my love for crochet. Lastly, I wanted to highlight my interest in rock climbing. I took cutouts of different images of me climbing and configured them to look as if there were “tiny mes" climbing up the yarn across my design.
All of these different aspects of me inspire my creativity and motivate me to create digital art.
